The dictionary defines a remix as a “different version of a musical recording produced in such a way”. While I agree with their definition, I would like to expand upon it. I believe a remix is more then just music. I think a remix can be made up of photos, videos, even print media. If you mix videos clips from all sorts of movies into a remake, or if you see a collage of photographs, these are all remixes. Musical remixes are usually the most popular example of a remix, and for good reason. The doors of music have been opened in so many ways because of remixes. For the first time ever, a rap song could have a rock and roll beat, or Jay-Z lyrics could be played with Keith Urban’s instrumentals. Its amazing, I can provide an example of when I have created remixes with music, and photography. Throughout my years of attending school, I have been assigned to make many different collages of photographs. Some collages were about the subject I was learning about in class, while others collages were focused on “describing me”. As much as I enjoyed them, I found creating audio remixes to be far more pleasurable. Back in my freshman year of college I had a radio show at Duquesne University. It was a sports talk show, and at the end of the semesters I would put remixes together of all the callers, all the interviews, and all of the funny moments on my show. I used the program Garage Band to mix and mash all of the clips of my show. Recently I have tried creating remixes with some of my favorite songs. I go to places like YouTube and rip a song’s instrumental version and then rip an acapella version of another song. I then go into Garage Band and mix the both of them together. Currently I am working on a remix with Jay-Z and John Williams music. I think these remixes are so spectacular and really enable the mind to explore itself and use it’s creativity.
